Hunan Women’s University (HWU), founded in 1985, is a public university co-founded by All China Women’s Federation and the Hunan Provincial People’s Government. HWU is the first public women’s university since the foundation of P.R.China, and one of the three independent women’s universities in China. It is the governing unit of the China Women’s University Consortium. The Education Department of Hunan Province has authorized HWU to offer master’s programs. When it was first established, Mr. Hu Yaobang, ex-General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee inscribed the name of the university; First lady Wang Guangmei, wife of former President Liu Shaoqi, served as honorary principal of the university during her lifetime.After about 40 years of development, the university has now become a characteristic applied sciences university with multiple disciplines.

The university is situated in the historical and cultural city of Changsha, adjacent to Hunan Provincial People’s Government. The transportation is convenient and it has a beautiful environment. It is an ideal place for students to build character and study diligently.

There are 10 secondary colleges, over 12000 students and 715 faculty members, including more than 230 professors and associate professors, and over 120 teachers with doctor’s degree.

The university has built a distinctive disciplinary and professional system focused on the elderly, the children, the women, and the family. At present, four disciplines, sociology, business administration, design, Chinese language and literature, have been listed among Applied and Distinctive Disciplines for Construction in Hunan Provincial 14th Five-Year Plan. The university offers 34 undergraduate programs and one professional college program. It has two first-rate national undergraduate programs, namely, domestic economics and tourism management, 11 provincial first-rate undergraduate programs such as women’s studies, 9 special programs such as gerontology established by the Ministry of Education. Four courses including Introduction to Linguistics are first-rate national undergraduate courses, and 47 courses are at the provincial level. The university has established more than 10 national and provincial research institutes such as Hunan Huxiang Women’s Culture Research Center. It is also the home to a provincial research and innovation team called the Modern Service Industry Integration Development Strategy Innovation Team, and home to the only service-oriented modern industrial college in Hunan Province called “Modern Home Economics Industrial College”. Additionally, it has built China’s first Exhibition Hall of Women’s Education Development History. In June 2023, the successful organization of the first Women’s Education and Poverty Reduction Sub-Forum, part of China-Africa Women’s Forum, has helped the university gain a positive response from the society.

The university has established an international educational philosophy. It focuses on applying advanced international educational concepts, introducing high-quality educational resources, and is committed to cultivating international and compound talents. Currently, we have established long-term partnerships with more than 30 universities and institutions in the United States, Australia, UK, France, Japan, Russia, South Korea and other countries and regions, to promote and deepen educational and cultural exchanges with countries along the the Belt and Road, and to comprehensively carry out various forms of international cooperation, such as providing opportunities for teachers and students to go abroad for study, research, training, and other student exchange programs.
